17 runners cleared some garden beds on a local estate, chopped back a bush for an elderly couple and ran 6k like a world marathon champion
According to the weather lady on television it's all over. It's going to get all cold and rubbish this weekend. Fortunately 16 savy individuals took advantage of the last of the late summer temperatures as they headed to Somers Town Community Centre to run and do good. Woooo hoooo!
Somers Town Tidy
We have been doing lots of work on some gardens outside a local block of flats over the last few months. We have been helping local residents Jon and Lee and their small residents gardening club in their efforts to turn the disused communal spaces into places residents can be proud of. Its starting to bear fruit- with one area we have concentrated on starting to look nice and tidy.
After a quick jog to the venue we got straight to work- focusing on another area of the gardens that needed some work. We weeded, turned the soil and spread the compost over the beds, allowing Lee and Jon to start planting in the area. We worked pretty quickly and in 30mins the soil looked fresh, tidy and ready to go.
Mission
While this was going on 3 other runners; Mairi, Beth and Jess, hightailed it up to Kentish Town. We had receive a request for help from one of our coaches, Brenda, as her and her husband needed a hand trimming back their unruly hedge. It was escaping onto the pathway so the girls headed over to make sure it was trimmed back out of the way. Nice work!
The Inner Circle
We all headed for a run- dashing towards Regents Park where we made our way to the Inner Circle. This traffic free circular loop is great for training on. Its 1k long (almost) and is used by cyclists to hone their speed away from the traffic. We experimented with a training method used by Kenyan Marathon Runners. We ran at a challenging pace all the way round the perimeter but tried to 'surges' between lamp posts as we went round. We didn't quite manage to run the paces those guys run....but Im sure we weren't too far off!
After a short walk recovery we made our way home to Somers Town. Nice way to see off the Summer!
