AKA the Levellers

Monday 12th August

Written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 13 GoodGymer's ran or cycled 6km to Burges Road Community Garden.

The list of tasks to complete this evening were sieving soil, planting tomatoes, reshaping and digging a path, and raking soil to level out the new raised beds.

There was a lot of raking involved In order to make the raised beds level, we even used a spirit level to make sure we were doing an accurate job!

But the transformation in 1 hour was fantastic, with a new path dug out ready for the team of engineers arriving next month.

If I had to pick a soundtrack to tonight, it would be 'This Garden' by the Levellers.

Well done team on the hottest day of the year!!

Raising the bed: A Soil-id Shovelling Success

Monday 15th July

Written by Eloise

On a somewhat grey summer evening, 11 GoodGymers braved the clouds and ran and cycled to Burges Road in Mile X to continue working on the wonderful community garden.

Our main mission was to conquer a mountain of soil in a neighbouring plot. Equipped with shovels, wheelbarrows and rakes, the team worked diligently, rotating roles to move the soil into the garden and distribute it strategically to create the foundation of a lovely large raised bed at the heart of the garden.

In addition to team soil shifting, Jonathan focused on propagating strawberries and digging up invasive nettles. The team also moved large logs to clear the space where we uncovered a fabulous frog!

The mission was made even more special as we welcomed Liz to GoodGym and Stephen celebrated his 25th good deed!

An extraordinary display of teamwork and determination and a testament to what we can achieve in a short time 💪🏻

Thunderbolt and lightning (not very frightening!)

Tuesday 28th May

Written by Ian Gostling

Following a typically wet Bank Holiday, the forecast for tonight's task wasn't looking good... thunder and lightning at 6pm apparently!

Despite this, 6 Goodgymers ran 5km to support Burges Road Community Gardens, and it turned out to be a warm dry evening!

Faced with a wall of broken concrete, our task was to fill in a hole to create the foundations for the arrival of a shed, and to discard the remaining rubble into the skip.

The rubble came in all shapes and sizes, but the team got stuck in and in 50 minutes we had fully cleared the site!

The paths will soon be marked out in the garden, ready for some digging on our next visit. And there will also be shelter if the heavens decide to open...

Century of Digging

Monday 15th April

Written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 11 GoodGymers ran 5km to support Barge Road Community Garden.

Kudos to Mark, who was attending his 100th session!

We continued where we left off last week, pulling up roots, weeding, sieving through soil and picking up litter.

This weeks surprise find was an old Barbie! After 45 minutes of filling buckets, bin bags and piling up rubble we headed home after a job well done.

Rooting for rubbish

Monday 8th April

Written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 9 GoodGymers ran or cycled 5km to Burges Road Community Garden to help support a new local green space.

This local green space has been neglected and misused for many years, and will require lots of local support to help turn it into a community garden over the next 3 years.

When we arrived we met Lucy, one of the local members of Green Hearts volunteering group, who gave us instructions for tonights task.

We were armed with forks, rakes, and litter pickers to dig out old roots, pull up weeds and unearth any unnatural objects... ranging from a cuddly toy to a fiat hub cap.

The most interesting finds were 2 little frogs, who one day might become residents in the future garden pond!

After 50 minutes of sweat and many rubbish bags filled, we put down our tools ready to return for another session next week.

The evening was still light so we took the leafy route back into the city running along Marriott's Way.
