Weed-a-bits
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Lewisham.
- Saturday, 24th of June 2023
Miss G came to the UK in the 60s from a country far away where people lived in a supportive community of sisters and aunties and where young people used to visit the elderly to ask whether they needed help with anything. Maybe because of her upbringing, Miss G decided to become a nurse. It was rewarding but hard work. The enjoyment of helping others and the camaraderie of fellow nurses had a price: years of lifting patients heavier than her was tough on Miss G's health. Now she needed help with her garden, finding it difficult to bend her knees and back. GoodGym deployed two West Londoners to help.
Sevan and Kash didn't feel very competent navigating in Deptford. To them, it seemed like Miss G lived in the heart of a maze. A route recommended by google maps led through a closed private path. The GoodGymers had to find a way around only to find themselves in a labyrinth of randomly numbered houses. When they finally reached Miss G's address, they were late.
Miss G's garden was no jungle, unlike the one from Sevan's and Kash's mission earlier that day. Lots of little weeds flourished on the gravel, creating a perfect task for meticulous Sevan. Large weeds with woody stalks were growing through fallen netting, making it a job for Kash, who liked to cut and rip off things.
Miss G joined the weeding effort, picking the small weeds alongside Sevan silently. Sometimes she'd say something in her quiet voice.
There must be more weeds than plants in here.
If only those weeds were edible, it would've been alright.
Only when asked about her super skill, she opened up and talked about her past as a nurse. The trio chatted away the rest of the time, making a big difference in the garden. The only remaining work after the end of the mission was bindweed and a few large weeds on the flower bed but Miss G said she would deal with those as they were the easiest to access. Sevan and Kash disappeared from Deptford to emerge later in Ealing for their last bit of work of the day: writing the reports!
