On the second day of January, 8 GG Yorkies completed our second team task of the month
We met at West Bank Park to help coppice in the bottom orchard. The coppicing takes place on a ten year cycle so we were very privileged to be involved.
We were met by Catherine, who gave us a lot of guidance about which bits needed chopping and which bits to leave. We started with the snipping of lots of little whips, but with those out of the way, it descended into full tree felling.
We separated all the nice bits of hazel (which can be used by members of the local community for weaving their own fences etc), big logs and all the compostable stuff which we made into a huge hotel for hedgehogs.
It was sawing and lopping heaven, and we were even given biscuits afterwards to fuel our runs home!

Love the photo of me cutting down the branch that Ben's currently climbing. :-) It looks like he's getting his revenge by standing on my head!
PS I'm not actually cutting down the tree.
PPS Or is it Jim? ;-)
