Hedging and Ditching
1 GoodGymer made their way to help an isolated older person in Windsor and Maidenhead.
- Tuesday, 2nd of May 2023
Today Ms J and I time-travelled back and forth.
She talked about the times before the second world war, particularly about the practice of "hedging and ditching" that farmers got onto between growing seasons. This had something to do with maintaining the hedgerows between fields. But this practice stopped during the war years as the government instructed farmers to cut down all the hedges to plant vegetables. It seems the impact of that is being felt decades down the line as birds that nested in those hedges are becoming extinct or endangered, because those hedgerows never really grew back.
This of course led to chats about the environment and climate now. Heavy stuff, but it's something new I learned today.
We live, we sow, we learn and we grow. Enough profundity for a Tuesday!
