A group of well-layered and happy faces ran 3km to Grove Park Allotments to meet the site manager, Grant, for a morning of gardening.
We met at Peckham Rye Station by welcomed by the scent of fresh coffee at Fat Boy Peckham. As Storm Gertrude had lashed down overnight, our numbers were few but intentions high. A quick warm-up and we were off up-hill to the allotments. Met by Grant, he told us about the gardening projects which run alongside the allotment plots. They have local schools and a local asylum seekers organisation come in and manage areas of lands. As well as this, there's even an apiary for the bees!
Our task was simple, clear the paths of weeds and overgrown grass to improve wheelchair access. Naturally, the hoes, rakes and shovels came out and we set to work filling wheelbarrows and sending them off to the compost area.
By the time we'd finished, even the sun had decided to show up and help out.
Glowing from our gardening exploits, we had a downhill run through Warwick Gardens with an upper body work to finish off our morning workout.
A morning well spent and a lovely, though perhaps a little dirty, introduction for our first-timers.
We're back on Wednesday at Old Spike Roastery for some loft clearing as well as a little bit of speed work to fire up those legs for any Spring races.
